So. Music.

I like a lot of music. In fact, I like practically any genre. Some genres I don't like a lot of, but there will probably be a single song I do like... My main passion for some time has been Indie and Alternative music, this stems from my involvement of the Oxford University Indie Music Society (IMSoc). But how did I get involved in indie? Well... that's a longer story.

In my school days, I wasn't really into music. That was until 1991, when simultaneously I discovered Madness and Queen, the former by accident the latter by the extensive media coverage of the death of Freddie Mercury. I then got listening to the UK charts on a Sunday and watching Top of the Pops. By 1993, my views had shifted to Meatloaf and one of my favourite albums is till Bat out of Hell II. In 1993 I changed School and started making new friends. One of these friends was into heavy metal, and I discovered Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne. Unfortunately, these bands weren't getting much air time but bands like Blur, Oasis and Pulp were, so I slightly shifted from Heavy Metal to Britpop. In my last couple of years at school I stuck with it, so when I was randomly invited to the Indie/Alternative club night "Panic" in the 5th week of my second year in Oxford I was hooked!

I went to Panic every week from then until the end of my fourth year (except one week where I was ill). During that time I DJ'd on a number of occasions and I was President of the society for a year.

After I left Oxford, I went back a few times, including an extra special DJ set at the 15th Anniversary of the IMSoc club night. Sadly, by the time I'd moved back to Oxford in 2007, IMSoc was on its last legs and now is no more. So for the time being, I don't get to DJ. I have fund an alternative club night, and on the second tuesday of every month you'll find me at Intrusion, Oxford's Goth and Inustrial night at The Cellar.

Recently, some friends of mine have set up a band called The Mechanisms. They're steampunk, folky, spacey, piratey and cabarety. Listen to them! (And even better, give them money!)

A couple of years ago, there was a meme going round Facebook called the "30 day song challenge". I did it, and to prove how varied my music is, I've reposted it here: (For me, "Day 1" was 11th April 2011)

Day 01 - your favorite song
A difficult, but I think it has to be this...
The Wannadies - The You and Me Song
Day 02 - your least favorite song
Also a hard one, but this wins hands down, if only for knocking a very good song off the Christmas no1 spot because Noel Edmunds could afford to do it... (note a very young Jeremy Clarkson too)
Mr Blobby
Day 03 - a song that makes you happy
I love this song. It's so uplifting and underplayed!
Silver Sun - Lava
Day 04 - a song that makes you sad
This video really doesn't do this song the credit it deserves :-( but it's about the only one there is. And the reason it makes me sad? Well, the Kettering lot will know why...
Dave Wood - Make a new tomorrow
Day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone
So this and the next two days could be in any order and all could be a number of songs - each with their own memories. This one always reminds me of going to Exeter Ball with a bunch of OULES back in 2002, specifically of Andrea Watts...
Tiffany - I think we're alone now
Day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere
Reminds me of my trip to Germany in 2001. MTV was celebrating it's 21st birthday and as this was the first song they ever played on MTV, they played it a lot!
The Buggles - Video killed the radio star
Day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event
Again, lots of things I could do for this - but this song always reminds me of dancing at PANIC in Club Latino's back in 2000ish in front of the massive speaker in the corner...
The Cure - Lovecats
Day 08 - a song that you know all the words to
Got to be this, hasn't it?
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Day 09 - a song that you can dance to
I'm sure people who've seen me at Intrusion might say that "dancing" is the wrong term... but who cares!
Imelda May - Johnny got a boom boom
Day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep
This is a difficult one... I'm not sure any song makes me fall asleep exactly, so I've gone for long songs. Now, while I like this song a lot, I tend to get bored when the "I met a girl who sang the blues" verse starts...
Don McLean - American pie
Day 11 - a song from your favorite band
OK, so I have lots of favourite bands, but The Killers are one of them, and I love this song :-)
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Day 12 - a song from a band you hate
Now, I hated Take That in the 90's. I still hate Robbie Williams with a passion. However, their recent singles have been "acceptable"...
Take That - Greatest Day
Day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure
Not sure exactly what this meme is getting at with guilty pleasure... Have some bluebells...
The Bluebells - Young at heart
Day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love
Given this doesn't fit any of the genres I would normally listen to, I think it fits the category... It's still an awesome song though...
Earth, Wind and Fire - September
Day 15 - a song that describes you
I used to think this song described me. Not sure. Make up your own mind. Feel free to suggest alternatives.
Blur - Charmless Man
Day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate
The original version of this (of which this is the video) was awesome. However. The less said for the spoiling of it the better. Anyone who (even mentally) goes "Beep Beep" at the end of the first phrase of music will be shot.
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
Day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio
This seems to be on the radio a lot at the minute. Good song, and a welcome return for Roxette.
Roxette - She's Got Nothing on (But the Radio)
Day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio
And so we enter seven days, six of which I've played at panic...
Helen Love - Long live the UK music scene
Day 19 - a song from your favorite album
Well, the album had to be The Bends, but which song? Every single one is excellent. In the end, the video for this one wins. I'm thinking of a word... Can you tell what it is?
Radiohead - Just
Day 20 - a song that you listen to when you're angry
This is such a calming song and I love it. (Sorry for the crapness of the video!)
Saint Etienne - Hobart Paving
Day 21 - a song that you listen to when you're happy
Everyone should be happy, because Mum's Gone to Iceland! (Or Bejam as it was when I was young...)
Bennet - Mum's gone to iceland
Day 22 - a song that you listen to when you're sad
This song is a weird juxtaposition of bouncy happy music and depressing lyrics, but it makes me happy.
The Supernaturals - Smile
Day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
Now, call me a traditionalist, but you can't beat a good organ. Ahem. Plus this is a great piece of music.
Widor - Tocatta from Symphony No5 Op.42
Day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
I'm guessing some of you have been wondering when this would show up. I demand you play it at my funeral and sing some form of alternative lyrics... (although other Eels songs like "Novacaine for the Soul" or "Cancer for the Cure" might be more apt depending on the nature of my death...)
Eels - Mr E's Beautiful blues
Day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
OK, another difficult one. But Oompah Brass are so great. Check out all their other videos on youtube while you're there...
Oompah Brass - Paranoid
Day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
OK, so this has been the hardest one so far! I thought about taking the piss and putting chopsticks or something... but I can't even claim to be able to play that! At some time in the past, I'm sure I was able to play this on some form of piano-like object...
Bill Haley - Rock around the clock
Day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Enough said?
Jon Schmidt - All of Me
Day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens - Glitterboots Saved My Life
Day 29 - a song from your childhood
I first heard this song when I was very young because my grandparents had it on a cassette tape of various children's songs. This was, of course, before this version was released!
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
OK, so my favourite song (see day 1) has been a favourite for some time, but I played this song a lot last year...
Le Tigre - I'm so excited

It's now February 2013, almost 2 years since I did that list. I'm not sure much has changed, apart from having to renew a few of the links. If I had to do it again, I think the only changes I'd make are day 17 (probably replacing it with Bellowhead - Roll the Woodpile Down) and Day 30 (which would be replaced with The Mechanisms - No Happy Ending).
